Sponsored by St. Margaret’s Episcopal School in partnership with the City of San Juan Capistrano and Marco Forster Middle School, Breakthrough SJC was founded by Headmaster Marcus D. Hurlbut of St. Margaret’s Episcopal School. Mr. Hurlbut recognized the need to broaden the school’s outreach into the San Juan Capistrano community by offering a program to prepare young people to enter and succeed in strong academic high school programs. In addition to founding the San Juan Capistrano program, Headmaster Hurlbut started two other Breakthrough (formerly known as Summerbridge) programs, one at The Derryfield School in Manchester, New Hampshire and the other at Friends Academy in Locust Valley, New York.
Program Director Diosa Adams, who previously taught at Breakthrough Austin, is grateful to the St. Margaret's Episcopal School community, the staff of Marco Forster Middle School, and the City of San Juan Capistrano for their continued support of this program. According to Adams,

“It has been exciting to watch the program mature since its inception in 2006. I have seen breakthroughs in attitude, confidence, and self advocacy in our students throughout their tenure in our program. Breakthrough provides these students with the skills to advocate for change in their own educational future and I am honored to collaborate with the community of San Juan Capistrano to expand our students’ opportunities.”
