Our family-centered tutoring, mentoring, school advocacy and mental health combined service model originally started the at the University of Illinois and has expanded to serve hundreds of west side Chicago and Oak Park children in schools since 1988. Our interdisciplinary team offers services from individual treatment to school consultation to educational rehabilitation planning and intervention.
The youth of Chicago neighborhoods Austin, Humboldt Park, Logan Square and West Garfield and many jin suburban areas grow leery into their second decade with major risk for death, lost of freedom, or of hope of a better life through an effective education. The risk of school failure is significantly higher for these youth compared to others in most other neighborhoods in Chicago and most of Oak Park given the unrelenting substantial academic achievement gap for children of color. Poor performance, school dropout, and illiteracy transactional1y interacts and compounds violence, substance abuse incidence. Their Health Status statistically ranks by virtue of their address amongst the top 10 neighborhoods in the city of homicide, asthma mortality juvenile delinquency and high school dropout rates. Those children that survive death as the result of the high rates of infant mortality, unintentional injuries, and asthma crisis too often lose the motivation to learn and drop out physically or mentally. Youth with serious learning difficulties and psychiatric/neurological challenges such as lead exposure, violence brain injury, Attention Deficit and Anxiety disorders are further burdened by minimal or no timely or distance access to specialists.
