The Elliot family of Lake Norden, South Dakota, knows a thing or two about embracing new challenges - five years ago they moved from Ireland to start a dairy farm in the United States. Rodney and Dorothy Elliot and their three children - David, James and Becky - arrived in South Dakota in February of 2006 and by May construction for their family dairy farm, known as Drumgoon, was underway. They began milking in their brand new facility in December, 2006.
At Drumgoon Dairy, the Elliots believe a happy, healthy cow will produce wholesome milk and therefore, built a cross-ventilated barn which contains free stalls. This kind of accommodations draws a steady air flow width-ways through the barn, making it very comfortable in any spot of the barn. The stalls in the barn allow cows to move in and out of them, eating, resting and drinking fresh water at their leisure. Drumgoon Dairy beds their stalls with sand and frequently grooms them for added comfort. Recently, the Elliots installed more ventilation in the milking parlor area, making it more comfortable for the cows being milked and the employees milking the cows.
Their herd of dairy cattle started with 1,400 cows and has grown to its current size of 1,900 head. The Elliott?s cows are crossbreeds of Jersey, Holstein and Swedish Red and are milked three times a day in a parlor that accommodates 48 cows at one time. Their cows produce an average of 22,700 pounds of milk annually, per cow.
Drumgoon Dairy employs 33 total staff members to take care of the cows? needs. The Elliot family enjoys helping employees build their skill set on the dairy farm, even if the employee has plans to move in the future. They have several employees that have been with them since they began milking cows five years ago.
On top of taking care of their dairy herd, Drumgoon Dairy farms 460 acres of corn and alfalfa and owns 200 acres of pasture land. Because, the Elliot family believes supporting local famers is a top priority, 90 precent of their feed is from Hamlin County, where their dairy is located at. Their farmland is fertilized with manure from the dairy and they also supply manure to local farmers as natural fertilizer. Drumgoon Dairy works to reduce greenhouse gases by purchasing feed and supplies from local businesses and crop farmers who help make their dairy thrive.
The Elliot family has taken on challenges of starting a dairy in the U.S. exceptionally well, smiling broadly as they look to a bright future of producing wholesome milk for consumers to enjoy.
