Brett D. Smith PE, PG, managing principal for ECA and ECA Geophysics, is a Registered Professional Engineer (PE) and a Licensed Professional Geologist (PG), with over 25 years energy and environmental industry experience and expertise. Mr. Smith holds a bachelor's degree in environmental Biology, has earned the equivalency of a bachelor's degree in geology and holds a master's degree (cum laude) in Geophysics from the Colorado School of Mines - a top engineering and earth sciences school.
As a graduate degreed geophysicist, Mr. Smith works extensively with the ground penetrating radar (GPR), electromagnetic (EMI), magnetic, seismic refraction, refraction microtremor (ReMi), electrical resistivity, VLF and gravity surveying methods. Past geophysical surveys include work at Holloman Air Force Base (AFB) in New Mexico (EMI and magnetics), Hill AFB in Utah (EMI and GPR), the closed AFB in Galena, Alaska (GPR), several investigations at an abandoned Cuddeback Air-to-Ground Gunnery Range in the Mojave Desert (EMI and GPR), the Hanford Area nuclear reservation in Washington (GPR), tribal land in Washington (EMI and magnetics), a detailed gravity survey in 1983 at Mt. Shasta, California (master's thesis) and various locations throughout the United States (all methods).
As a summer intern for AMOCO Oil Company in Denver (1983), Mr. Smith painstakingly analyzed and edited a massive stacking velocity (seismic) database and utilized said data to create accurate Velocity vs Depth conversions for the company's drilling efforts in the Beaufort Sea in Alaska. This achievement was sufficiently impressive (and useful!) to earn Mr. Smith a rare "leave-of absence" status with the company, in the hope that he would return to AMOCO after graduating the following year with a master's degree in Geophysics from the Colorado School of Mines.
As an exploration geophysicist with Conoco Oil Company, Mr. Smith created subsurface structure maps and advised exploration staff as to the most optimal use of enhanced seismic data. His efforts enabled a critical Gulf Coast exploration well to be completed ahead of schedule, thereby saving the company a considerable sum of money.
As a PE, PG, Mr. Smith is highly qualified to write health and safety plans (HASPs) that enable the safe performance of environmental site assessments and geophysical surveys at Superfund and other hazardous waste sites. Our personnel annually "refresh" the 40-hr HAZWOPER training which Mr. Smith initially obtained in 1989 when employed as a Project Engineer with Woodward Clyde, now part of the URS Corpration.
Mr. Smith's environmental engineering and site assessment experience includes projects in many locations throughout the United States. He has been a guest speaker regarding environmental spill compliance at several venues, including the Environmental Conference of Washington in Seattle and the Northwest Public Power Association's Engineering and Operations Expo in Tacoma. His experience as a Permits Engineer with a state regulatory agency enables him to effectively advocate on behalf of his clients, thereby reducing compliance costs.
