Grossenburg Implement was founded in 1937 by Charlie and Blanche Grossenburg. Charles Jacob Grossenburg was born near Rock Valley, Iowa. At the age of twenty Charlie came to Tripp County South Dakota. Jessie Blanche De Bolt was born near Stuart, Nebraska in 1905. Blanche settled later in Presho, South Dakota and taught school for three years near Kennebec, SD and Hamill, SD. Charlie and Blanche met near Hamill and were later married on August 24, 1926.
Charles Jacob Grossenburg had a passion for selling and trading cattle and hogs. He would bring cattle to Sioux Falls and Omaha for sale, and later around 1937 found an opportunity in bringing tractors to the Tripp County area. During World War II the market for Two Cylinder tractors was on the rise and this is what started the foundation of Grossenburg Implement. As a friend at Deere and Company put it, "Charlie possessed the American secret of making things work, and simultaneously exploiting them. That spells service, and a way of selling it to the customer."
Blanche worked in the business as the bookkeeper and she sold parts. She also helped with the ordering of the new equipment to sell. Blanche worked with the company until she passed away in 1998 at the age of 93. She loved her business, she loved the employees, and most of all she loved her family. She will always be remembered for her positive attitude, her enthusiasm, and her outlook on life.
Gene Grossenburg is the son of Charles and Blanche Grossenburg. After graduating high school in 1949 Gene became active in the Implement business. Ever since Gene was a little boy he had a part in forming the Grossenburg business. Grossenburg Implement sold Oldsmobile and Cadillac automobiles along with the John Deere product. Gene Grossenburg attended school at South Dakota State and also General Motors school in Flint, Michigan. After about 18 months in school, Gene was drafted into the army in January of 1952 in the Korean War. While serving in the army, Gene married LaWayna Swaney on August 25, 1952. After the War and at the age of 21 Gene became half owner of Grossenburg Imp.
Barry Ross Grossenburg is the son of Gene and LaWayna Grossenburg. Barry graduated from Winner High School in 1974 and later from South Dakota State University in Brookings in 1978, with a B.S. in Agri-Business. Barry was married to Marilyn LaCompte on July 21, 1978. Marilyn Grossenburg is the Owner of Rosebud Concrete here at Grossenburg Imp. Barry Grossenburg was always involved in the Implement business since he was a little boy. In his own words, "I was born, raised, and will die, an Implement dealer." Barry Grossenburg is now the President of Grossenburg Implement.
