Proyecto Coqui was incorporated in October, 19as a non-governmental organization (NGO) in the P. R. Department of State (Inc. No. 22020). Its mission is the conservation of biodiversity, particularly of the amphibians, through scientific research, environmental education and habitat protection. Proyecto Coquà has been a successful organization with many achievements especially in scientific research and environmental education. In scientific research, Proyecto Coqui has monitored the status of amphibians for the last 20 years in several forests in Puerto Rico, and as a result, documented the extinction of three species of coquis, and the local extirpation and declines of six other species. These disappearances have been associated to several factors such as climate change, habitat degradation, and disease. One of Proyecto Coqui’s main contributions to environmental education, is to support the publication of various articles and five books related to conservation and biodiversity, written in Spanish, for the general public, students and teachers. In addition, Proyecto Coquà has offered technical advice (ad honorem) to governmental agencies in Puerto Rico’s Commonwealth and to the government of the United States about the conservation of biodiversity, and its trained members have offered workshops related to amphibian conservation in almost every municipality in Puerto Rico. Proyecto Coqui has it’s a website (www.proyectocoqui.org) that provides valuable information not only on the amphibians of Puerto Rico, but on a vast range of its biodiversity worldwide.
