Sara's Hallmark began on August 11, 1987 when Nancy McClure and her daughter Sara bought the Plaza House of Hallmark Cards in Stuart Park Plaza, Cleveland, Tennessee. The next year they expanded the gift lines and remodeled to improve the flow throughout the store. In the spring of 1996 Nancy and Sara were offered the opportunity to double the size of Sara's Hallmark which allowed them to add even more cards and gifts as well as a second cash register. Sara's Hallmark now offers the largest selection of everyday and seasonal cards in the area. A remodel in 2009 created a more efficent layout and a feeling of greater space even though the square footage remained the same.

Familiar Hallmark cards can be found as well as Tree of Life, Mahogany, Sinceremente, Big Time Greetings, and niche captions such as foreign language birthday, loss of pet, entering the military, bar mitzvah, and many others.

Other offerings from Hallmark include recordable storybooks, albums, stationery, Hallmark Hall of Fame DVDs, and gift wrap. Non-Hallmark gifts include Springbok puzzles, Magnabilities necklaces, Douglas plush, Wellspring stationery items, Hallmark Channel DVDs, CDs from both Somerset and Green Hill, and Perfect Potfuls from Coffee Masters.
