WePassed was founded in 2009 by a group of Johns Hopkins-trained board-certified medical physicists in Maryland. Despite having sailed through the written parts of our certification process with the American Board of Radiology, and having spent countless hours of study and thousands of dollars on preparation materials and review courses, we failed the oral board exam in our first attempt and had to repeat it in the following year. That had meant another year filled with anxiety and more time spent on preparing for the exam that could have been spent more productively for other purposes.
We were not alone in this respect. Many other physicists, even some senior ones who for whatever reasons had put off sitting for the board exam, also failed the oral part in their first time taking it. Data from the ABR show that only about half of the first-time takers passed the oral exam. The rate has been staying at that level in the past decade.
Never having sat on the other side of the exam process, we may never know why the passing rate among the oral exam takers is so low. Based on our own experience, however, we could list several possible contributing factors: (1) The candidate did not have a good idea on what to expect regarding the exam, be it the types of question or the intimidating exam environment; (2) Trying to prepare for everything, the candidate tried to cram everything into memory, resulting in a poor hold of key points;
